Damien Hirst (b. 1965) is one of the most influential figures in contemporary British art. Rising to prominence with the Young British Artists in the 1990s, he explores life, death, beauty, and belief through painting, sculpture, installation, and printmaking. From animals preserved in formaldehyde to meticulously arranged spots, butterflies, and exuberant cherry blossoms, Hirst pairs striking imagery with questions about the human condition. His work draws us in through color, pattern, and spectacle, then asks us to consider the fragility of life and our desire to make beauty last.
